Recruit locals
Manoa Kaleca, Suva
I totally agree with the sentiments of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Linda Tabuya which I read some days ago.
It stated that we should concentrate on recruiting Fijians first than hiring people from overseas for all these top positions.
Firstly, we have within us qualified and experienced people in Fiji who can do the job at hand.
Secondly, this will in turn save a great deal of money because hiring people from overseas costs more and we pay them double than what the Fijians get.
Lastly, we have heard of the brand ‘Fijian Made’ but this should be expanded to another term which I call ‘Fijian First’.
Let us put Fijians first and give our fellow countrymen a chance to prove to them that they can do the job just as well. After all, we are Fijians.
Roads
Narayan Reddy, Lautoka
On my way to Suva using the Kings Road from Lautoka, l was surprised with the damage sustained by the new road in the last flood.
My Government gives a lot of money towards roadwork. Looking at the conditions of our road one cannot just blame the weather alone.
Someone once told me that the then Public Works Department (PWD) was using kerosene with bitumen to increase the volume, so they can seal more road.
I just hope no one is still doing this.
Road oversight
Sukha Singh, Labasa
I refer to the article ‘Road Oversight’ and the comments made by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama that Fiji Roads Authority had failed to monitor the construction of a particular rural road.
This could mean that a qualified road engineer or road construction supervisor should be present at the road construction site until the road is completed.
When a contract is given out, the road construction specifications should be very clear. If it says a 12-inch layer of gravel should be on this road, then so be it, for the entire length of the said road .
My suggestion would be: Can the final payment be given six months after the road has been completed?
Second chance
Wise Muavono, Lautoka
What’s cool about Lent is that it falls just about the time that our New Year resolutions have fallen to the wayside.
Use Lent as a reminder of all the things you wanted to do to make 2017 a better year. It’s your second chance.
Father of Education
Timoci Waqa, Nadi
Our Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama is caring so much about education in Fiji. Free bus fares, free text book, free school fees, building of new school blocks, dormitories, and teachers’ quarters, the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme and scholarships. It never happened before in Fiji. He should be called: ‘The Father of Education’.
Toddler missing
Tomasi Boginiso, Nasinu
This is very serious and a warning to all the parents not to leave their children alone as many things can happen.
Whatever it may be, either jumping into the drain or abduction, it’s the parents who should be responsible and should be blamed for this ordeal.
Watching the news, we saw the toddler’s aunt doing the talking and the mother was unseen but also talking.
After seeing pictures of the child I believe everyone is wanting the child to be found alive.
We can only pray for the child. We sincerely hope that the relevant authorities deal with this issue very wisely.
