With projects ranging from resurfacing to total rehabilitation, the City of Saskatoon plans to make more than 200 kilometres of roadway improvements this construction season.

Under the city’s Building Better Roads program, the city intends to work on 206 lane kilometres of roadway and more than 20 kilometres of sidewalk throughout the season. If completed, it would bring improvement totals to 1,085 lane kilometres of roadway and 56 kilometres of replaced sidewalk since the introduction of a dedicated road levy in 2014.

“This is shaping up to be another busy construction season so we would like to remind drivers about the importance of respecting work zones, for their safety and for the safety of the people working in them,” the city’s acting general manager of transportation and utilities, Angela Gardiner, said in a statement.

“Day or night, when you see lights, reflective cones and work zone signage, slow down, obey signage, and pay attention, even when construction work may appear halted or complete.”

Some of the key projects include rehabilitation of the northbound overpass at 33rd Street and Circle Drive, intersection improvements at Arlington Avenue and Taylor Street and rehabilitation of Victoria Avenue. The city also expects traffic flows in the east and northeast to improve with the opening of the North Commuter Parkway and a new interchange at McOrmond Drive and College Drive.

The city’s annual funding for road construction, road repair, pothole patching, sidewalk rehabilitation, back lane upgrades, street sweeping, and snow and ice management, is $61 million.
