Locals stop road construction work
Local people stopped construction work of a 1,340-metre-long road in Habiganj’s Baniachong upazila on Thursday, protesting use of ‘substandard’ materials.
According to the upazila Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) office, a tender was floated for construction of the road near Daulatpur-Chawlkbazar point at a cost of Tk 74.42 lakh. Construction firm M/s Hasan Enterprise of Brahmanbaria got the work order.
On October 30 in 2018, local lawmaker advocate Abdul Majid Khan laid the foundation stone of the road construction work. On paper, Hasan Enterprise got the work but another contractor named Ujjal Mia from Baniachong was doing the work.
Masuk Mia, a local union parishad member, alleged that the contractor used very low quality bricks for construction of the road by managing some LGED officials.
If the road is constructed with substandard materials, it will be damaged immediately, said Hasmat Ali, a resident of Daulatpur village.
Another villager Allal Mia said due to use of substandard construction materials it seems the road will not last long, so locals stopped the construction work.
Refuting the allegation of using low quality materials, sub-contractor Ujjal Mia said, “A few locals demanded extortion money from me. As I refused to pay the money, they stopped the ongoing construction work.”
Upazila LGED engineer Al-Noor Tarek said he heard that villagers stopped the road construction work.
Necessary steps will be taken in this regard after investigation, said the engineer.
